My name is Father Gabriel Chukwunomso (Emmanuel) Okafor. I am the son of Augustine and Virginia Okafor. I was born in Nigeria, West Africa, and I was raised Catholic.

 

I am the third son in the family of six children, five boys and a beautiful girl. She is not spoiled, but she is the best one out of the six of us. I am the third son and the only one who is a priest.

 

In July 2004, in order to pursue my dream of becoming a priest, a dream that started when I was four years old, I left Nigeria to study in the Philippines.

 

During these years in the Philippines, I was able to engage in different kinds of ministries in the Church. I also started my philosophical and theological studies. After some busy years of studies, I completed my bachelor’s in philosophy at the Rogationist College Seminary. And I also completed three years of Theological studies at Don Bosco Center of Studies, also in Manila, Philippines.

 

In March 2013, I met Bishop Richard Garcia in Manila, and he accepted me as one of the seminarians of the Diocese of Monterey.  In January 2014, I arrived in the United States to continue my studies and my formation tothe priesthood. I was assigned to Madonna del Sasso Pro-Cathedral Salinas for nine months.

 

In August 2014, I began my last year of seminary formation at St. John’s Seminary, in Camarillo, California.

 

In 2015, I was assigned at St. Williams Catholic Church in Atascadero, for one year of pastoral formation. After the completion of my pastoral year at St. Williams, I went back to St. John’s seminary in Camarillo to continue thelast part of my Theological studies.

 

And on October 28, 2016, I was ordained a transitional deacon at St. Williams Catholic Church, Atascadero.

 

 In May 2017, I graduated with Masters of Divinity and Masters in Spiritual Theology degree at St. John’s Seminary.

 

On June 9th, 2017, I was ordained a Catholic priest, by the Most Rev. Bishop Richard Garcia, DD, and I was assigned to Madonna Del Sasso Pro-Cathedral, in Salinas, California for two years.

 

On June 2019, I was reassigned to the Old Mission San Luis Obispo California.

 

On October 12th, 2021, Most Rev. Bishop Daniel Garcia appointed me as the New Pastoral Administrator to Saint Timothy’s Catholic Church in Morro Bay. This ended my previous pastoral assignment as the Parochial Vicar of the Old Mission Catholic Church in San Luis Obispo. With great joy and obedience to God and to the Bishop, I accepted this great responsibility to journey with you in this Catholic community of Morro Bay. I pray that you will have a place in your heart to accept me as your beloved priest, brother, friend, co-traveler and son. Again, I am very happy to begin my new assignment with you at this beautiful parish St. Timothy Catholic Church.

 

I am very grateful to my good friend and brother, Fr. Edward Holterhoff, who led this parish for more than 23years. Fr. Ed has been there for me, and he welcomed me into his life even when I was a seminarian. His dedication to his priestly ministry and his love for the people and for Jesus Christ is worthy of emulation. I thank him and he will forever be part of this beautiful family.

 

I am looking forward to meeting you and sharing our faith together. I am grateful to God for his love and grace to me during these years. I know that we will be praying for each other.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

 

¡La paz del Señor sea contigo!

 

Mi nombre es Padre Gabriel Chukwunomso(Emmanuel) Okafor. Soy hijo de Augustine y Virginia Okafor. Nací en Nigeria, África Occidental, y me criécomo católico.

 

Soy el tercer hijo de una familia de seis hijos, cinco varones y una hermosa niña. No está malcriada, pero es la mejor de los seis. Soy el tercer hijo y el único sacerdote.

 

En julio de 2004, para perseguir mi sueño de convertirme en sacerdote, un sueño que comenzó cuando tenía cuatro años, dejé Nigeria para estudiar en Filipinas.

 

Durante estos años en Filipinas, pude participar en diferentes tipos de ministerios en la Iglesia. También comencé mis estudios filosóficos y teológicos. Después de algunos años ocupados de estudios, completé mi licenciatura en filosofía en el Seminario del Colegio Rogacionista. Y también completé tres años de estudios teológicos en el Centro de Estudios Don Bosco, también en Manila, Filipinas.

 

En marzo de 2013, conocí al obispo Richard García en Manila, y él me aceptó como uno de los seminaristas de la Diócesis de Monterey. En enero de 2014 llegué a Estados Unidos para continuar mis estudios y mi formación al sacerdocio. Me asignaron a Madonna del Sasso Pro-Cathedral Salinas durante nueve meses.

 

En agosto de 2014, comencé mi último año de formación en seminario en St. John's Seminary, en Camarillo, California.

 

En 2015, fui asignado a la Iglesia Católica St. Williams en Atascadero, por un año de formación pastoral. Después de completar mi año pastoral en St. Williams, regresé al seminario St. John en Camarillo para continuar la última parte de mis estudios teológicos.

 

Y el 28 de octubre de 2016, fui ordenado diácono de transición en la Iglesia Católica St. Williams, Atascadero.

 

En mayo de 2017, me gradué con Maestría en Divinidad y Maestría en Teología Espiritual en el Seminario de St. John.

 

El 9 de junio de 2017, fui ordenado sacerdote católico por el Reverendísimo Obispo Richard García, DD, y fui asignado a Madonna Del Sasso Pro-Cathedral, en Salinas, California durante dos años.

 

En junio de 2019, fui reasignado a Old Mission San Luis Obispo California.

 

El 12 de octubre de 2021, el Reverendísimo Obispo Daniel García me nombró Nuevo Administrador Pastoral de la Iglesia Católica de San Timoteo en Morro Bay. Esto puso fin a mi asignación pastoral anterior como Vicario Parroquial de la Iglesia Católica Old Mission en San Luis Obispo. Con gran alegría y obediencia a Dios y al Obispo, acepté esta gran responsabilidad de caminar con ustedes en esta comunidad católica de Morro Bay. Oro para que tengas un lugar en tu corazón para aceptarme como tu amado sacerdote, hermano, amigo, compañero de viaje e hijo. Nuevamente, estoy muy feliz de comenzar mi nueva asignación con ustedes en esta hermosa parroquia de la Iglesia Católica St. Timothy.

 

Estoy muy agradecido con mi buen amigo y hermano, el P. Edward Holterhoff, quien dirigió esta parroquia durante más de 23 años. P. Ed ha estado ahí para mí y me dio la bienvenida a su vida incluso cuando era seminarista. Su dedicación a su ministerio sacerdotal y su amor por la gente y por Jesucristo es digno de emulación. Le agradezco y siempre será parte de esta hermosa familia.

 

Espero conocerte y compartir nuestra fe juntos. Agradezco a Dios por su amor y gracia para conmigo durante estos años. Sé que estaremos orando el uno por el otro.
